HIST 4230: History of the Reformation
Project Duration
April 16, 2025 – approximately 6 hours
Overview
With no prompt for this assignment, I focused on one of the major themes the course covered, namely, how Roman Catholics and Protestants thought of works.
Process
I coupled previous knowledge gained outside the class with two works the professor assigned as reading during the semester to write the paper. My two sources included Thomas à Kempis’ work Imitation of Christ and John Winthrop’s sermon, “A Model of Christian Charity,” also known as “A City upon a Hill.” Using these two sources, I outlined the distinctions between Protestants and Roman Catholics in how they think about works and salvation.
Result
I received top marks on the project, in addition to high praise from my professor:
Exceptional work here. This is a clearly presented and well argued analysis of two very different Reformation arguments that dovetails perfectly with some of our major course themes. . . Great job.
