ENGL 3430: British Literature to 1780
Project Duration
Late January to Mid February
Overview
For this assignment, I was given a different task for each section of the paper. For the first section, I had to define the positions of three authors on the topic of liberty. These three were John Locke, Mary Astell, and Olaudah Equiano. The second section focuses on Equiano and the method and shape of his argument. The third section aims to demonstrate the relevance of Equiano’s work to my own views.
Process
I used the three works the professor gave the class to read and use for the essay (taken from the Norton Anthology English Literature, tenth edition), as well as several definitions from the Oxford English Dictionary. With these I established my arguments and provided evidence.
Result
I received top marks on the project, in addition to high praise from my professor:
Your final draft is an enjoyable read. I commend you for your attentive revisions, esp. to the Meditatio, and the more concentrated insights of this version which faithfully convey an accurate sense of the whole of the arguments you represent. The essay manifests your firm grip on Equiano’s work and the confluence of different ideas about liberty at work in the 18th century. Good work. Well done.
