Course
ENGL 3430: British Literature to 1780
Project Duration
Mid April to Early May
Overview
The professor tasked me with identifying an idea to trace from the medieval era to the modern era. I then had to explain the development of the idea and chart its course through three different texts we had read throughout the semester. Finally, I had to show its significance and relevance to my own worldview and its similarities and dissimilarities with my beliefs.
Process
I performed a close reading and analysis of Everyman, John Donne’s “Anatomy of the World,” and John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. I made my arguments with evidence from these texts and the Oxford English Dictionary.
Result
I received top marks on the project, in addition to high praise from my professor:
What a joy it is to read your work! You revise with a good eye and a good ear, and produce an essay that clearly demonstrates your ability to trace downstream the currents of an idea from the fourteenth century to the twenty-first century. Your prose likewise bears the mark of good critical thinking at any level: the presentation of complex, nuanced ideas in clear, accessible prose. Well done.
